Crisis of Confidence

This playing card deck was concepted around Jimmy Carter's 1979 speech Crisis of Confidence. It was a condemnation of the nation and our overfocus on things and consumerism. Each face card has a different event, invention, or moment of significance that drove America to this point between 1969 when we landed on the moon, to 1979 when President Carter delivered his speech.

Role
Art Direction + Design

Challenge
To create a playing card deck and system around type and the concept of events.

Solution
A strict type based system with classic suits. Each face card takes on a different event of consequence. The backs of the cards are the Apollo 11 launch in 1969 which led us to landing on the moon. The deck of cards also comes with a booklet with the full transcript of the Crisis of Confidence speech as well as a white and gold foil seal reading 'O Say Can You See'.
